45 RPM analog cut of the first Funkadelic album

I’m sure some of you have heard that Org Music is about to reissue the first Funkadelic album. A double 45 RPM analog cut! There’s gonna be a lot of side turning going on . Org Music has made some quality releases lately and I believe Dave Gardner mastered it, so I’m sure the sound will be awesome.

There’s been talk about the Funkadelic albums ever since they started releasing the Westbound stuff. Just like @elbitsz mentioned a while back. Org Music hasn’t made any official statement yet, so there’s not much info about it, but the test pressings have already been made. So it shouldn’t be to long. If I understood correctly there will also be a regular single disc version as well.

Catherine Vericolli, that’s been involved in restoring/archiving the Westbound catalog, made a really great interview over at Tracking Angle last week where she talks about it. There’s a lot about archiving/tape restoration/mastering and that kind of stuff in the interview, so if you’re into that you should definitely check it out. But they also talk about the Westbound master tapes. And it’s up on yt as well, if you want to watch/listen instead.

This is what she said about the Funkadelic release:

Catherine Vericolli: There are some really incredible things upcoming with Funkadelic specifically, but we’re doing all analog cuts. They’re 45s, 45 RPM.

Evan Toth: Oh, really?

Catherine: We are doing a double 45, all analog, direct-to-lathe, tape-to-lathe cut of, at least, Funkadelic - Funkadelic, the first one. I just got the test presses. We were the most concerned about this because it’s the first one we’ve done and we have more upcoming for Funkadelic.

Evan: Funkadelic, right. You must have grabbed them all, I’m sure.

Catherine: There’s too many. What I can say is we’re going to do the ones that we should do. They’ll also be a regular single-disc LP release as well. The 45 test presses sound insane. They just sound so incredible. They don’t sound new…

Evan: They sound right.

Catherine: They sound what they’re supposed to sound like. I’m super, super excited about that and I hope that everybody else is too. I know the Steve Hoffman guys have really gotten wild on the forums about whether or not we’re going to release Funkadelic. Obviously we’re going to release some Funkadelic.

There was a lot of buildup around, are we going to be able to pull this off? We did tape copies. There’s a potential, I don’t know, but there might be some liner notes, some technical liner notes that will go in, which will have some of this information on it. Like, here’s how we did this.

Evan: Maggot Brain on a two-disc, 45 RPM release?

Catherine: That I cannot confirm. The only one that I can confirm is Funkadelic. I don’t have a release date though.

Here’s two images of some of the tapes.

And here’s a promotion video, that Org Music made for their first Westbound comp, where you see a lot of cool tapes.

Hopefully/probably some more awesome stuff will be released later on. Probably a good reissue of Maggot Brain. But what I would really like is something like Toys 2. Or do I dare to say a live show from 1970..

I wonder if Clinton’s lawsuit will effect any upcoming releases..

This is one vinyl reissue that is probably worth getting.

I’m truly happy and grateful if this really happens. I for one want to hear anything close to the original master tapes as possible. And hoping for bonus unreleased music too! And who knows, maybe a live show, or two circa 1969/1970😁
Fingers are so crossed :crossed_fingers:t5: for this.

While this is great news, I am still holding out hope for the Warner Bros. era reissues.

I will definitely be getting this!

This is very exciting news. The Parliament discography has sounded great for years while Funkadelic has been a mixed bag. Hopefully these sell well. Seconded re: hope for Warner era reissues too, if only so Charly quits inbreeding the same needledrops they’ve been using since the 90s.

I’ve just spotted that Org Music have got more details about this reissue here. In the UK there’s also a single-disc exclusive colour option at Rough Trade. It’s due at the end of August. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

Awesome! The double 45RPM version will apparently be in a tip-on/case-wrapped gatefold. Nice.

On the Org Music page it says that the 45RPM version is all analog directly from tape and that the single disc version is from high-resolution tape transfer.

Ordered the 2 LP 45. So excited for this! I know these aren’t exactly audiophile level recordings, but I have never found a good original so this is exactly what I need!

The record store The ’In’ Groove is also doing an orange color variant of the 45 RPM version.

One of the things I find interesting with this is that while the sound will definitely be improved, no new liner notes will accompany the release. What I’m saying is we as Funkadelic fans know that the band did not play on 75-80% of this record. So at this stage, 2025, it would be great to list the musicians on this album. Just find it a bit odd that the full package of the album wasn’t fully updated like recording was. Please leave me your thoughts on this as well.
Thanks

Do we know that there won’t be any new liner notes? I suppose they’re trying to stay true to the original as much as possible, so there will probably not be any on the back cover. But since the 45 RPM will have a gatefold, I suppose there could be some notes on the inside of the gatefold.

I noted that on the Org Music page they only mention Eddie, Billy, Tawl, Tiki and Mickey Atkins.

edit: Actually, when I read Danny’s book I was surprised how much they did play on the album. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Same. Felt like it was now a proper Funkadelic album - with some notable guest appearances.

Hitherto, I had been lead to believe they only played on a few tracks and Atkins was completely absent. Was mostly done by Motown’s finest, the Funk brothers.

That made it more of a curiosity. A Funkadelic album with few Funkadelics on it is not quite worthy of the name. Now it’s one of my favourites. Now only the Bernie picture seems incongruous.

The musicians are all listed in “The Authorized P-Funk Song Reference” book by Daniel Bedrosian (who posts on this forum)

Has anyone talked to Billy “Bass” Nelson about this reissue? I like to hear what he thinks about it. Since he is on the record, wanted to know his take on this.
