45 RPM analog cut of the first Funkadelic album

Mine came in this week, too. I did the first half last night and it was tremendous. Wide sound stage. A lot more going on than I ever remember hearing. The recording itself was not audiophile quality so I had to adjust my unreasonable expectations, but once settled I was very happy with it. I can’t wait for more of these.

I think I enjoy listening to this version even more than the OG. Don’t know if it’s the soundstage or what it is, just nicer to listen to (on my system anyways). Like the break at the end of Good Old Music (around 5:00). Damn! Can listen to that all day.

Catherine and Dave were on the latest episode of the Vinyl Guide. It’s a podcast about music and record collecting and can be found on most podcast apps and on spotify. Here’s a link to yt.

They talked about the usual. Mastering, restoration, tapes, Westbound.. Both of them love to talk about this stuff. And they talk a lot. And sometimes at the same time . But seriously, I’m so glad that they’re the ones that’s doing the Westbound catalog. We’re in good hands!

Here’s some stuff they said about Westbound/Funkadelic.

  • They found a lot of Funkadelic stuff. Like a lot of alternative versions of tracks from America Eats It’s Young.
  • They been told (but not seen themselves) that there exists unreleased solo records from various Funkadelic members. Damn! I wonder what that could be.
  • The forthcoming Funkadelic reissues will be released in both 2x45 and 33. Both versions will be cut all analog.

When this series of remasters was announced, I was hoping for some bonus tracks…hopefully future editions might!

Agreed. The extra bonus tracks on the remastered cd are excellent.

My only gripe thus far is the compressing of the digital releases. Hopefully they’re reading what fans have been saying (the Hoffman forums are less forgiving than I am) and give The Squishmeister a different job. Otherwise, I am absolutely pumped for the future of this campaign. “Unreleased solo records” got that Pavlov’s dog reaction out of me.

Yeah, it’s strange that they compressed the digital releases so much..
