The FunkMob made me so proud at Essence Fest, I almost cried at the end. If I were alone, I probably would have let a few tears drop.
As an opening act, the Superdome was maybe about half full, and the floor seats were about 10 to 15 percent full. The MC of the show asked people to come up to the front to " help make the legend feel the love". So, many people on the floor came up to the stage.
When the show began, about a 90 second cartoon played with Prelude type vocals over it. I will admit that the TV production (The screens around the Super Dome and behind the stage), was stellar. Essence did an excellent job with special effects and TV production for the crowd. The band came out to Knee Deep, and they sounded crisp. I was sitting center stage in the 200 section of the Super Dome (Section 221, Row 1) and my area was full of folks that attended the Mothership Landing in 1976. Our section was grooving. I saw many younger (30 to 40 year olds ) clapping their hands and moving to the music. The Mob played the album version of Knee Deep. Michael crushed the solo, and it looked like Dennis Chambers was on drums. One Nation followed and it also was tight. I believe Tear The Roof Off followed, and I really don’t remember We Want the Funk sounding that good live in the last 30 years or so. They crushed that song, and the crowd responded. At this time, The Mob had the crown in the palm of their hands. Next came Cosmic Slop with Nona Hendrix helping on vocals. (Chefs Kiss) Most of the crowd didnt know that song, but the band killed it so much, there was a roaring ovation at the end. Our Funky Super Heroes were blowing up the stage!!!
The momentum slowed during the “Shake the Gate” set. So, my little editorial here. Un known songs to a relatively Placebo crowd was not a great move. Even I am a little worn out over the Shake the Gate songs live. So, the first 35 minutes this was the fish taking the bait and then 25 minutes or so of you shouldn’t have bit fish.
Maggot Brain brought the Funkateers back, with Big Boi from OutKast reciting the , “Mother Earth” vocals. Big Boi forgot some of the words and GC had to bail him out at the end 
but the song was excellently done. P-Funk Wants to Get Funked Up was next, truncated, but good. Would have been great if Danny’s mic was working. George had Danny take over some of the Lolly Pop Man lyrics, and we could not hear him at all. George had to jump in and fill in. Still, the P-Funk crowd woke up.
Then, Mothership Connection started. The stairs to the Mothership had been out the entire time. The band was off initially, but got in sync, and then the Mob hit the Swing Down part of the song. Glenn Goins was transposed onto the screen to look like he was singing the song live. They had Glenns vocals going as well. After that, Kim Burrell was brought on stage to bring the Mothership down. Nona Hendrix was there as well. There was so much smock, I could barely see George. The landing didnt hit the spiritual mark as the past, but it was beautiful. Had GC come out of the Ship in the full length white fur coat and the blonde wig, Id probably still be in a New Orleans Hospital passed out!! Instead he looked like one of the Mardi Gras Indians if you know what I mean. Not a real Dr. Finkelstein look. But I still was losing my mind.
George came down the stairs while the band jumped into Flashlight. Savion Glover played the part of Sir Nose. George had an actual Bop Gun and shot Sir Nose with it , and Savion began his tap dancing. The horns and Savion went back and forth with the horns playing 2 bars and then Savion tapping 2 bars. It was cleaver. After that, you could see the Que Dawgs hit the stage and Parliament Funkadelic closed out with Atomic Dog.
When the MC said everybody give it up for George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, such a wave of pride went through me. The crowd stood and clapped. The Funk Mob tore up the stage with songs 50 years old!!
The opening act didn’t come back, we got no encore, but we got an awesome show. The Mob got 90 minutes which was great for a crown of mostly 30 to 40 year olds. There were some of us old heads in there, but I was happy to see a few generations behind the heyday of PFunk giving homage to the greatest band to ever do it.
Forgive any misspelled words or poor grammar. I just wanted to let it rip and write off the top of my head.

Oh yes. That tells u a lot about the Bop Gun. Now do u have the album that comes with the comic book that breaks it all down? If not, and if your truly interested, will need that. But we all here, are proud of your curiosity to say the least. A "P"funkster is born everyday!!
