Funkadelic S/T back cover line up

Can anyone identify each player on the back cover of Funkadelic (self-titled) with absolute certainty? I’ve been trying to figure this out, looking at photos of the members from that era, but it’s still not clear to me.

If I had to guess, I’m going with Billy in orange w/ sunglasses, Mickey Atkins in purple, Tawl in red, Eddie in blue, and Tiki in green.

Thank you! Interesting that Bernie is included in the photos but not credited on the record. And vice versa for Mickey.

True! If memory serves, Bernie does play on one song on the album. I don’t recall which. @DannyBedrosian would have the info.

Checked the book  . Appears Bernie is not on any track on the album. Although he’s on the b-sides Open Our Eyes and Fish, Chips & Sweat.

Mickey Atkins is on I Got A Thing, Good Old Music, Qualify & Satisfy and What Is Soul.

Great question!

Thanks for the info! That all makes sense. Although it still seems odd that Bernie is pictured when he’s not playing on it, and Mickey is credited but not pictured. :man_shrugging:

Bernie is definitely not on the first Funkadelic album. According to a quote from Bernie directly, he’s on everything from Free Your Mind down.

If you have the reissue with the expanded track list - then, technically, I suppose he is on the album as he plays piano on Open our Eyes.

Until Danny’s book I assumed Tawl was also missing from the album despite the promotional pic of the classic line up.

Micky Atkins is missing from that picture but at least we now know that, like Tawl, he was not absent from the album.

The received wisdom prior to this seemed to be no Tawl, no Atkins, not very much - maybe a couple of tracks, tops - from Eddie, Billy and Tiki, whilst almost all of the heavy lifting is done by the Funk brothers.

As much as I love them Motown boys, that made me feel, ever so slightly, like Funkadelic wasn’t a proper Funkadelic album.
