Produced and directed by Questlove with appearances by the Doctor. It premiered at Sundance this week and was extremely well-received.
Shameless plug: the current lineup of The Family Stone will be out on the road all year celebrating this release. Come see us if you can. Next show is Feb. 1 in Lincoln, California with War and Tower of Power.
If it’s half as good as summer of soul I’ll be a happy man.
It’s great! Different than Summer of Soul, but everyone involved did an awesome job.
Can’t wait to see it. On a different note, did anyone catch the SNL 50 Years of Music last night? Why do you suppose Questlove, a supposed funkateer, would snub the P-Funk appearance on the show?
I mean he brought out all kinds of “avante garde” artists. Sun Ra, Zappa. 3 hours and no George. Plenty of Rick James Though. C’mon now.
Great documentary. Very beautiful, very sad. Ruth Copeland is on there, which blew my mind.
That was unexpected, although I was aware of the connection.
Was that a recent interview or old footage?
I just watched it. Very emotionally gripping for me. I laughed and cried. Powerful stuff and essential viewing. One of the best music docs I’ve seen.
The stuff about Ruth Copeland and Funkadelic was a very interesting side note. How many gigs did they play with her and what dates???
Not sure about the dates anymore. Billy or somebody told all about it some years ago in some print media. I believe it was post-Maggot Brain.
There’s some dates Ruth plays with Sly in September, just before Meadowbrook and there’s some dates in November, which seem more likely.
I wonder if it’s the November shows when Sly goes to the toilet and stays there.
Something not mentioned in the doc (but I heard through internet tittle-tattle) is that Ruth announcing her band as Funkadelic at the start of every gig was a bone of contention. It’s not mentioned, but Ruth makes a point of saying her band WAS the original Funks in the documentary. Ruth gets the last word on the subject
I saw that too! Want some footage of her with Funkadelic!
