The official concert program for the Music and Sound Funk Festival from 1977.
You’re welcome.
Now that is a good one right there. Wish I could have been there. Nice and thanks!
Very grateful. I’d love to hear the audio from one of those funk fest. Thanks again
@timmyfunk1 Thanks a lot for sharing this. Your archive is blissful!
I heard the Isleys dipped out because promoter didn’t have their paper
There were a number of issues involving the Isleys. Taking forever to break down their equipment, which would sometimes delay performance times. They also didn’t like the fact that Bootsy was going on stage after them, since their then current album Go For Your Guns sold more than Ahh…the Name Is Bootsy, Baby!. The promoters rightly thought that breaking up the powerhouse combination of Bootsy’s Rubber Band and Parliament-Funkadelic would not be a wise move. Bootsy is the only appropriate primer for the madness of P-Funk.
The Isleys sold more than all the acts but they knew what they were getting into. There was no way they would go on last. P Funk was too hot and theatrical. I wonder if they got sued because its definitely a breach. They definitely didn’t get paid the promoter pocketed their paper
That observation needs to be fine tuned a bit. The Brothers Johnson and Rufus scored platinum selling albums along with the Isleys. But one problem was that the Isleys were seen as an oldies act by the time they landed on the bill for the Funk Festival. I remember people who were there telling me direct that there were people in the audience yelling out things like “GET THESE OLD ASS N*****S OFF THE STAGE!”. Additionally, the other bands had just as many problems with the Isleys as they did with the promoters. They were always very slow in breaking down their equipment to make way for the next act. It got to the point where the Isleys were nicknamed “the Ego Brothers” for their overall behavior during that tour. Hence their quick exit from the Funk Festival. Lastly, from what I was told directly, no one missed the Isleys when the announcement was made that they weren’t going to perform.
