Early Funkadelic session images

Here’s some more great images (I know some of you already seen them ). Free Your Mind or Maggot Brain session. I’m guessing Free Your Mind, but don’t know. Anybody knows? Photos by Don Paulsen.

George was telling me that Maggot Brain was two echo units - one on the floor was Eddie’s Echoplex, the main echo on his guitar parts that comes and goes. The other was a portable mono reel machine IN the control room, when they were mixing. It makes the twittery high-end chirpy echoes that they added to whatever tracks or parts (like drums or guitar) that they wanted to make more freakey. As they may not be recording that specific song, it’s hard to say, but there doesn’t seem to be an echo machine near Eddie.

Many of these images were featured in an article for Sepia Magazine dated June 1970. The first article done on Funkadelic for a nationally distributed publication.

What was the article?

The article was called “Soul Is A Hamhock In Your Cornflakes”. The article mixed images from this collection, as well as images from the February 16th gig from Ungano’s in NYC.

These pics were taken most likely from the sessions that produced the Free Your Mind album.
