Catfish Hodge - Boogie Man Going to Get You, Co-written by Gary Shider, produced by Calvin Simon

I’ve just discovered this curio. Released on Eastbound records. All songs bar one co-written by Gary Shider, album produced by Calvin Simon.

Released in 1972.

Does anyone have any more information on this?

Don’t know much about that album, or the artist. But Garry is also credited on the second album Dinosaurs And Alleycats.

I did some digging around and found this blog from 2019 about Catfish Hodge. The author doesn’t say where he got his info from, but it seems plausible/reasonable to me. He wrote the following.

One independent label bucked the trend, Westbound Records. Founded and run by Armen Boladian, Westbound Records and its subsidiary Eastbound Records were doing well. They were home to Denise LaSalle and The Detroit Emerald and Bob [Catfish Hodge] decided to visit Armen Boladian. He’d heard Empathy and liked what he heard, and decided to take a chance on Bob. He gave him $500 and told him to record some demos.

Five songs were recorded at a small studio owned by a local band SRC. Then Armen wanted to see Bob play live. Bob just so happened to be playing in a local club. So Armen headed over to the club, accompanied by two members of Funkadelic, George Clinton and Calvin Simon. That night, Bob won over not just Armen, but the two members of Funkadelic. They encouraged Armen to send Bob to Toronto, where Funkadelic were recording America Eats Its Young. Armen agreed, and Bob headed to Toronto, where he recorded Boogie Man Gonna Get Ya.

I also found an interview with Catfish Hodge’s brother Dallas Hodge that was a bit strange. He says the following around 42 minutes in.

The Boogie Man was being played on CKLW because what we did. Armen Boladian, the record company president/owner, he made a smart call. The guy who was doing the engineering for us in Toronto, because we recorded up there, Lee DeCarlo and Ken [Sands], they set it up that he was co-writer on several of the tunes. That way we could break through the old issue of having Canadian content, because CKLW had a hard time playing you if you didn’t have Canadian content.

But only Hodge and Garry Shider got writing credit on that album (besides on the Beatles cover). Maybe he mixed up Garry and the engineer when he was telling the story. But if Garry got writing credits because they wanted to get Canadian air-play, does that mean that he had Canadian citizenship at that time? Strange..

That’s some great detective work.

I had never heard of Catfish Hodge before - randomly found him on a Discogs deep dive.

Wonder if there are any similar production/writing credits like this for other members that aren’t in the Pfunk Song reference? The Pfunk universe keeps getting bigger!

Really looking forward to your next book Danny.

Had to go back and check the For the Record book. Yeah, Hodge is in it talking about that show that the blog referenced.
