# Bootsy between AEIY and Up for the Downstroke

Further to that, what was Bootsy doing in the intervening year/s between America Eats its Young and Up For the Dowstroke?
JB’s —-\> Houseguests—-\>Funkadelic——\>?———\>Parliament.
According to studio timelines, he did some more sessions with James…I guess that was enough to persuade him 😂

Now this is what I want to know. Weren’t the Complete Strangers coming up at this time? All I know is he said he dropped alot of acid during this time. Like every day for 2 years. Folks have always said Cosmic Slop is his bassline, I would like to know the tale on that too. I honestly don’t think there is anyone who will fill in the blanks.

Yeah I think Complete Strangers is after the Houseguests. Me thinks. I think some of the story is explained in the liner notes on that vinyl they put out a couple years back.

Yeah, the Houseguests was before the Complete Strangers. They released the single [_Fun In Your Thang_](https://www.discogs.com/Bootsy-Phelps-And-The-Complete-Strangers-Fun-In-Your-Thang-Part-1-2/release/6344383) as “Bootsy Phelps and the Complete Strangers” in 1972, not sure if that was before or after they joined p-funk the first time. Probably after.
Between AEIY and Up for the Downstroke they also released [_Together In Heaven_](https://www.discogs.com/Bootsy-Phelps-And-Gary-Together-In-Heaven/release/6328962) as “Bootsy Phelps And Gary”. That’s _Together_ that was remaded on Chocolate City.
The liner notes on that _My Mind Set Me Free_ vinyl don’t talk a lot about what happend after the Houseguests. But love that vinyl! I think I was probably confused by the studio timelines/ release dates of some singles. I’m not sure that’s actually the case.

It’ s after they played on America eats its young. Houseguests disbanded after leaving Funkadelic and became 400 Years Of What. Gary was in Madhouse band with Joel Johnson

It was only Randy and Ronnie that went from the _Houseguests_ to _400 Years Of What_, right? Kash joined them later in the 1970s for a short while.

‘A lot of people don’t know Jimi Hendrix wanted us to be his band. At the time he was looking for a black act. He came from the black side of things, with Little Richard. He wanted to go back from the Jimi Hendrix Experience, but his deal was we’d have to quit James, because back then one artist wouldn’t take players from another. We thought about it and I was game, but the guys didn’t want to do it. [Jimi] ended up getting Band of Gypsys.’

I’ve probably told the story of how Jerome Brailey ran into Bootsy on the chitlin circuit at that time. He say’s Boots told him he would never work with George again. Much to his suprise encountering Casper at Detroit for the Mothership Connection sessions.
