I just realize the Serious Slammin’ reel is dated April 1987, which is nearly a year before The Pointer Sisters’ album. Whaaaat?! So the song was offered to George first (or concurrently)? That’s very odd.

I wasn’t even aware that there were aborted Brides albums O_o Was that as far as the mid-80s?? I guess after the archives program of the 90s and 00s, George is pretty much done with releasing what he wanted us to hear (I think I remember Danny once explaining in a thread that George had little interest in adding more unreleased material to the canon).
There definitely was always a lot of self-recycling anyway (which is common with overprolific artists, not just P-Funk), so IDK about French Kiss, it doesn’t sound particularly dated to me by contrast to the rest of TCT, but who knows… It’s also possible that the mastering alone managed to give TCT a certain edge compared to the other records from that era, IDK. The cover art and booklet design certainly reflected a desire to move on towards a new era/sound.
By Way Of The Drum was apparently from 1985, yet planned for 1989 (no wonder MCA shelved it TBH: that one did sound dated in the new jack swing era IMHO—though I’m very happy it saw the light of day later).

Yup I don’t remember where I read it, but somewhere along the line I remember learning that French Kiss was a leftover 80s-era Brides track. Funny how different our ears are sometimes. The production always sounded similar to “Quickie” for some reason. It’s got Blackbyrd’s fingerprints all over it to me. YMMV…
